An Organisation is Only as Extraordinary as its People

An Organisation is Only as Extraordinary as its People

We rely on our people every day. They are human beings before employees. They have hopes, desires and dreams. When they’re able to be happy and successful within themselves they get the motivation to take their organisation to even greater heights.

In Britain, only 17% of workers claim to love their job and over half of full time employed people are currently looking for a new job (jobdescirption-library.com, 2022). We’re dealing with ‘the great resignation’, an ongoing economic trend in which employees are leaving their jobs in record numbers post-pandemic.

People want more from their careers than ever before. It’s no longer enough to have free tea and coffee, bean bags and a work social event every quarter. The ten things people want most from their career in 2022 are:

  1. Work-life balance.
  2. Positive relationships with colleagues.
  3. Positive managerial relationships.
  4. Appreciation of their work.
  5. Financial stability and confidence in their company’s performance.
  6. Job security.
  7. Interesting work.
  8. Learning and development.
  9. Values of an employer that match their own.
  10. Career development.

At the core it’s about their values and happiness. We spend more time at work than with family and friends and look for fulfilment and validation between 9-5.

Organisations can have the greatest vision but without the right people who share those values and truly want the business to succeed, their goals will never be realised. People are the link between the strategy and delivery. They are your most valuable asset.

Happy employees will stay at their company seven times longer than their dissatisfied colleagues and will be 31% more productive and produce 37% higher sales (Harvard Business Review, 2022). This is big news for employers.

Despite being the competitive advantage, the people can be overlooked. Technology and data are commodities, but people are the differentiators. There are over half a million tech companies in the US alone but only one Google. They attract and retain the best talent with their unrivalled employee benefits program and their GROW coaching model. Taking care of their staff’s health and wellbeing and that of their family means their output can be optimised.

The employee experience = the customer experience. 85% of people agree that improving employee engagement translates directly to a better customer experience.

46% of Gen Z are very much concerned about their personal wellbeing and are demanding more from their employers in terms of support and development. Knowing that a company cares about their well being, not just their output is now a fundamental for millennials and Gen Z when searching for roles.

Cultural impacts

Organisational culture is the collection of values, expectations, and practices that guide and inform the actions of all team members i.e. “it’s just the way we do things around here”. When leaders set a good example being open, professional yet supportive and open to new ideas, a positive culture is nurtured. This is through consistent and authentic behaviours from management, clear goals are set with inclusivity and respect as core values. Nipping any unwanted behaviour that’s disruptive to others happiness and progress at work is equally important.

Progression and development:

Lack of career progression, training courses and employee development come up time and time again as reasons why employees are leaving their roles. Many employees have serious potential, yet they are held back by their own limitations. When we work with them one on one to understand their motivations and provide them with a roadmap to achieve more, it unlocks their true capability.

Coaching

At When Pigs Fly we work with teams and individuals to bridge the gap between personal limitations and career coaching. Creating agile mindsets, reducing burnout, improving team relationships and performance to build a transformative and innovative culture. We work to fulfil those key ten employment components cited earlier as the most important, so employees feel like they’re getting the most from their career.

Investing in your team through development, coaching and training directly correlates with productivity, sales, customer satisfaction and company reputation. When people are put first, the organisations outperform their peers.

People are the gap between ideas and action, business plans and execution. If those people are extraordinary, so is the organisation. We exist to help your people and business to be extraordinary.
